As I reviewed the past year, I can’t help but reminisce about a standout hotel from my September trip to the United Kingdom — Raffles London at The OWO. This remarkable spot has stayed with me.
Recently, while watching The Agency on Paramount, I squealed out loud because a pivotal scene was filmed at The OWO – a sexy rendezvous between lovers. The hotel continues to serve as a setting in subsequent episodes of this new spy series. And I reached out to congratulate the general manager with whom I had breakfast at the very same table where another tense exchange between characters unfolded. As a spy thriller, there could be no more perfect place than the Old War Office, which used to house the British Secret Service and Military Intelligence Service (MI-5 and MI-6)!
I recommend The Agency, which stars Richard Gere, Jeffrey Wright, Michael Fassbender, and Jodie Turner-Smith. After the first episode, I realized it was a remake of Le Bureau des Légendes, a gripping series about the French undercover spy service DGSE. I streamed and watched all five seasons on Sundance years ago; you can now see The Bureau on Prime Video. The Bureau is also very, very good and definitely more French, with the undercover agents struggling with “who am I” and “why am I?”!
Speaking of existential moments!
When you step into Raffles London at The OWO, you’re not just entering a hotel – you’re entering a chapter of history. Nestled in the heart of London, this remarkable property was once the site of the Old War Office, a building that has borne witness to some of the most significant events of the 20th century. Today, after a stunning transformation, it has been reimagined as a luxurious hotel that elegantly balances its storied past with modern opulence.
As I wandered through the grand corridors of The OWO, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe. Each step felt like I was walking in the footsteps of giants – Winston Churchill, T. E. Lawrence, and other influential figures who frequented the building during its days as a government hub. The walls, steeped in history, seem to hum with the echoes of conversations that shaped world events. It’s an atmosphere that’s both humbling and inspiring.
Perhaps the most charming surprise of all is the hotel’s hidden spy bar, which serves as a nod to none other than James Bond. The fact that Ian Fleming, the creator of 007, once walked these very halls adds a thrilling layer to the experience. It’s one of those details that feels like an insider’s secret – the perfect spot to enjoy a cocktail while soaking in the allure of the building’s past.
The building itself is an architectural marvel. Originally completed in 1906, The OWO is a testament to the power and prestige of the British Empire. The restoration process didn’t just preserve the building’s historic grandeur – it celebrated it. Original features have been thoughtfully integrated into the design, from the iconic façade to the sweeping staircases, while modern touches add to the luxury and comfort of the space. The Guerlain spa is a true sanctuary, offering a serene escape from the bustling city. But the highlight? The subterranean indoor pool. It’s absolutely stunning – a hidden oasis of calm that feels worlds away from the city’s frenetic energy.
One of the most moving parts of my visit was touring the suites and room categories, particularly the suite dedicated to Christine Granville. I first read her biography over a decade ago and have never forgotten her remarkable life. A Polish noblewoman and a fearless spy for the Allies during World War II, Granville’s courage and daring exploits were nothing short of extraordinary. Tragically, she passed away unrecognized and in poverty, working as a chambermaid and murdered by an ex-lover, a stark contrast to the glamorous suite now dedicated to her memory.
Walking through those rooms, it was impossible not to feel emotional. The opulence and elegance of the suite were a beautiful tribute to a woman whose bravery was unmatched, and the luxury of the suite – including a breathtaking bathtub – felt like a long-overdue recognition. If only she could have seen it. If you’re interested in learning more about her life, The Spy Who Loved: The Secrets and Lives of Christine Granville is a must-read. It’s an incredible non-fiction read about this remarkable woman.
Raffles London at The OWO is more than just a place to stay. It’s a gateway to London’s past, offering an experience that is both luxurious and deeply connected to history. Whether you’re visiting for a glamorous getaway, seeking a well-located retreat in the heart of the city, or simply wanting to immerse yourself in London’s fascinating legacy, The OWO offers an unforgettable journey. It’s a perfect blend of modern elegance and historic grandeur – a place where the past and present come together to create something truly exceptional.

The hair salon on site struck me as very neat and seemed to harken back to earlier glamourous days. I could imagine doing my best Betty Draper imitation and making a hair-styling appointment after a long flight to get ready for fun on the town with my dapper husband!
And, for those who desire something truly unique, the hotel’s subterranean indoor pool is a stunning, serene escape. It’s not only a place to unwind but also an architectural marvel that embodies the harmony between history and modern luxury.
