Summer is officially here, and with it comes a spirit of play, movement, and connection. Living just a few blocks from Nationals Park, I’m already eyeing the schedule and planning a few evenings under the lights. (Though I’ll admit—watching a game today, with all the data and analytics, is a far cry from seeing the Yankees play 50 years ago. Back then, it was all about instinct and atmosphere.)
Here in Washington, DC, summer brings its own kind of kinetic beauty. You’ll find sculling races gliding along the Potomac, soccer matches springing up on the National Mall, and this year, I’ve joined a tennis clinic at the renowned Rock Creek Park Tennis Center. It’s the same center where, more than fifty years ago, Arthur Ashe brought professional tennis to the capital—a legacy that lives on in the annual Citi Open, still held every summer on those very courts.
Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, the French Open is in full swing on the iconic red clay of Roland Garros. Watching it reminds me that the world’s greatest sporting events are never just about sport—they’re cultural touchpoints. They draw people together with elegance, passion, and a certain je ne sais quoi that inspires us to travel, to celebrate, to feel.
Some matches stay with us forever. For me, it’s the 2001 US Open quarterfinal between Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi—a breathtaking duel that stretched over three hours and 32 minutes, every set a nail-biter, every serve unbroken. It was pure magic: a rivalry at its peak, just five days before the world changed forever. What joy that was to watch! That match is seared into my memory as one of the sport’s most powerful moments.
Because truly—it’s never just tennis. It’s the experience of it all. The vibrancy of Paris in summer, the sophistication of the crowd, and the champagne toasts in between sets. It’s a dream I’ve long had—to be there in person, soaking up every ounce of energy, elegance, and joie de vivre.
