Loveliness on an Austrian Lake: Rosewood Schloss Fuschl

Inspiration

While travelers flock to Italy, Greece, the UK, and France (for the Olympics!), today, I wish to highlight a stunning resort that just re-opened on July 1st on the shores of Lake Fuschl in Austria: Rosewood Schloss Fuschl.

I’m eager to give you the inside scoop on this secret (not for long) treasure!

The Reopening of Rosewood Schloss Fuschl

If you’re unfamiliar with Lake Fuschle in Austria, you will surely know of The Sound of Music, which was filmed in the area. Salzburg and its environs offer rolling hills (alive with the sound…) and luscious forests. Rosewood Schloss Fuschl just reopened and sits on the shores of this impressive lake. It’s just a short 30-minute drive from Salzburg, renowned as the birthplace of Mozart and for its annual musical festival.

This resort is so rich in history. Built in 1461 as a grand hunting lodge and summer residence for the Archbishop of Salzburg, this castle evokes fairytales and enchantment. It’s a premier destination for those in the know. My mentor, Anne Scully, shared a story of her stay there years ago: during a solstice festival, she witnessed fires popping up along the hills in celebration of the height of summer. Talk about magic!

Over the past decades, Schloss Fuschle welcomed many illustrious guests, such as iconic film stars like German actress Romy Schneider from the famed Sissi film trilogy produced in Schloss Fuschl. (She starred in the films from the 1950s, though the recent Netflix series on Sissi is excellent, too!)  Foreign dignitaries, royalty, and other celebrities have escaped to this alpine resort to restore and rejuvenate themselves.

In keeping with its A Sense of Place® guiding concept, Rosewood protected the property’s deep heritage while they modernized the resort. They hired London-based G.A. Group International to design the gorgeous public spaces and guestrooms. Of note, G.A. Group also designed the Cadogan, a Belmond Hotel, and the Atlantis The Royal, Dubai, among others. Rosewood also appointed an Austrian interior design firm to refresh the heritage suites and chalets. The guestrooms offer exceptional views and have hand-painted mini bars depicting the four seasons, crafted by local Austrian artist Marie Hartig.

As you can see from the images below, all of the choices embrace the rich history and bring the breathtaking landscapes of the mountainous terrains’ flora and fauna indoors. This thoughtful renovation is meticulous, beautiful, and brilliant.

The resort feels like a boutique, with only 98 guest rooms, which include 42 suites and six chalets. It also features five world-class restaurants, an indoor and infinity outdoor swimming pool, and an Asaya spa, Rosewood’s integrative well-being concept.

Here are just a few reasons to add Rosewood Schloss Fuschl to your wish list:

Pristine Waters: Lake Fuschl is known for its crystal-clear, turquoise waters, which are among Austria’s cleanest. The lake’s high water quality makes it ideal for swimming, fishing, and other water activities. Why is the water so clean? Only electric boats are allowed on Lake Fuschl—no motors. That means the water is not only swimmable but also peaceful and quiet! This preservation of the natural beauty and ecological balance ensures the specialness of this place.

Scenic Landscapes: The lake is surrounded by picturesque scenes, including lush forests, rolling hills, and the majestic Alps as a backdrop. This natural beauty attracts photographers, nature enthusiasts, and anyone who loves to be awed by the views from their windows.

Recreational Fun: Lake Fuschl offers numerous fun options, including hiking, cycling, kayaking, paddleboarding, and boating. Visitors can explore well-marked trails and paths. The concierge can also arrange ballooning, paragliding, or a ride on the gondola. The Zwölferhorn Seilbahn, located in St. Gilgen, is about a 20-minute drive. This cable car will take you up the Zwölferhorn mountain and offers spectacular views of the Salzkammergut region. The hotel also provides a lake club right on the lakeshore.

Cultural Appeal: This region has long been home to the Salzburg Music Festival, which this year runs from Friday, July 19, 2024, to Saturday, August 31, 2024. You can attend an impressive array of opera and orchestral performances and even enjoy a private behind-the-scenes tour of the Festspielhaus. Or you can also explore the rich heritage of traditional craftsmanship in Austrian fashion. Salzburg is famous for its baroque architecture, historic sites, and rich musical heritage. Visiting this vibrant city offers an opportunity to explore its narrow streets, grand palaces, and lively markets. It’s also famous for its puppetry! The Salzburg Marionette Theatre, founded in 1913, is one of the world’s oldest and most renowned marionette theaters. It has a rich history of producing high-quality puppet performances, including adaptations of Mozart’s works, ballets, and more.

The icing on the cake is that the hotel maintains a fleet of rare vintage cars, and the concierge can help arrange personalized chauffeured drives in the Salzkammergut region to explore charming villages such as Hallstatt, Faistenau, and Ebenau.

Sold!

The grand reopening of this enchanting property is so exciting! Rosewood blends old and new in such a charismatic manner. I just love the place’s rich history, the peacefulness (thanks to electric boats!), the stunning scenery, and the myriad cultural options.

You can embrace both your city mouse and country mouse with a stay here.

Plus, Rosewood Schloss Fuschle pairs well with Rosewood Vienna for a whole Empress Sissi immersive experience!

Let me know if you’re intrigued! The Rosewood announced a few Opening Celebration Offers that we can apply to your future stay.
