Scottish Highland Beauty

Inspiration

Scotland is such a beautiful place to visit because of its natural beauty, rich history and culture, and vibrant cities. I honestly believe that a large part of the success of Outlander is down to the spectacular scenery.

From the rugged highlands to the rolling hills and pristine lochs, the Scottish landscape is a feast for the eyes. The Highlands, in particular, is a must-see for any nature lover. This rugged wilderness is home to some of Scotland’s iconic landscapes, including Loch Ness, Ben Nevis, and the Cairngorms. Visitors can hike through the highlands, taking in the stunning views of the glistening lochs and rugged mountains, or take a scenic drive along the North Coast 500 route, one of the most beautiful coastal roads in the world.

Scotland’s history and culture are rich. From its ancient castles and ruins to its historical cities and landmarks, the place brings the past alive. Visitors can explore the iconic Edinburgh Castle, which sits atop an extinct volcano and offers stunning views of the city. Or, they can visit the ancient ruins of Hadrian’s Wall, which the Romans built in the 2nd century AD. Additionally, the Stirling Castle, which dates back to the 12th century, offers a glimpse into Scotland’s medieval turmoil and is considered one of the most important castles in Scotland.

Scotland also boasts vibrant cities that embody charm and offer plenty of things to see and do. Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, is a particularly interesting city to visit. Known as the Athens of the North, it is home to the famous Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, and the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Visitors can also explore the city’s charming Old Town, which is filled with narrow medieval streets and hidden courtyards, as well as its trendy New Town, which is known for its elegant Georgian architecture. And, of course, the Edinburgh International Festival is one of the most famous in the world. Held every August, it is an unparalleled celebration of music, theatre, opera, and dance performed across this beautiful city.

Another city worth visiting is Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city, which is known for its art, music, and architecture. Visitors can explore the city’s many museums and galleries, such as the Glasgow School of Art and the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. They can also take a stroll through the city’s Victorian architecture, including the Glasgow Cathedral and the Glasgow Necropolis.

Apart from these, Scotland is also home to many charming towns and villages, such as St. Andrews, known for its ancient university and famous golf course, and Inverness, the capital of the Scottish Highlands, which is an excellent base for exploring the surrounding countryside.

And we can’t visit Scotland without highlighting Scotland’s whisky distilleries, which are scattered throughout the country, are worth totally visiting. Whisky lovers can tour a distillery, learn about the whisky-making process, and sample a variety of different whiskies.

All in all, Scotland is a beautiful place to travel, with its natural beauty, rich history and culture, and vibrant cities.

One of the best ways I know to visit Scotland is on Belmond’s Royal Scotsman. The Royal Scotsman offers scenic rail journeys through the Scottish Highlands. Opulent and elegant, you’ll step back into time. This train features luxurious cabins, dining cars serving gourmet cuisine, a spa car (yes, they give manicures on a moving train!), and a lounge car for relaxing and taking in stunning views.
